Tank Size

· Fancy goldfish (round-bodied types like Orandas, Ryukins): Need more space
due to their limited mobility.
· Common/comet goldfish: Best kept in ponds or very large tanks (at least 40+ gallons
per fish).
Water Conditions
· Temperature:
o Fancy goldfish: 68–74°F (20–23°C)
o Common goldfish: Can tolerate colder temps, 60–70°F
(15–21°C)
· pH: 6.5–7.5 (stable)
· Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
· Nitrate: Under 40 ppm
· Water changes: 25–50% weekly, depending on tank size and stock
Filtration
· Strong filtration is crucial due to high waste production.
· Use a filter rated for twice the tank size (e.g.,
for a 40-gallon tank, use a filter rated for 80 gallons).
· Sponge filters can be used for additional biological
filtration.
Substrate & Decor
· Substrate: Smooth gravel or sand; avoid small gravel they can swallow.
· Decor: Smooth, no sharp
edges. Leave plenty of open swimming space.
· Plants: Live or silk.
Hardy species like Anubias, Java fern. Goldfish may nibble on them.
Lighting
· Moderate lighting; needed for plant health and a stable
day-night cycle.
· Avoid excessive lighting to prevent algae growth.
Feeding
· Feed small amounts 1–2 times a day.
