This particular plant is a perennial plant. This plant is a member of the Asparagaceae (Liliaceae) family. The botanical name of this plant is called  Asparagus officinalis. Make sure you plant it where it can grow undisturbed and be productive for about 15 to 20 years.
This particular plant is one of the earliest crops to come to harvest in spring. Without been told the edible parts of the asparagus plant are young, tender, green shoots, called spears. The Spears are the young leaf stalks—eaten leafless—it can grow from the plants roots in early spring.
Furthermore, this plant can be grown from seeds or root divisions called “crowns”.
This particular plant are commonly not harvested in the first year after planting. Make sure you allow the plants to develop a strong root system before you begin to harvest the spears in spring of the second or third year after planting.
If you are growing the asparagus from seed, the first harvest will come during the third year.
The planting and sowing of Asparagus
The following are the sowing and planting tips of Asparagus:
  1. Make sure it is grown from seed or root divisions, this is also called crowns.
  2. You can start the seed indoors eight to six weeks before the last frost in spring. You can transplant the plants to the garden when they are well established, two or three weeks after the last frost in spring.
  3. Make sure you sow the seed ¼ to ½ inch deep (6-13 mm). Make sure you pot up young plants until they are well established before transplanting them to the garden. You can set transplants in a trench six to eight inches (15-20 cm) deep.
  4. Make sure in spring of the second year, you cover all the tops of the spear growing tips to help the plants establish strong roots.
  5. By peradventure if you actually start the plants from crowns, make sure you set out crowns in late winter or early spring when the soil can be worked, usually about two weeks before the last frost in spring.
  6. Make sure you plant crowns in trenches eight to ten inches (20-25 cm) deep and also 12 inches (30 cm) wide.
  7. Make sure you set crowns at the bottom of the trench then cover it with 2 inches (5 cm) of soil.
  8. Make sure you space crowns and plants 8 inches (20 cm) apart for slender spears to 14 inches (36 m) apart for thick spears.
  9. Also make sure you space trenches 4 feet (1.5 m) apart.
  10. Make sure you grow the asparagus plant in a loose, aged manure or aged compost enriched soil.
  11. Immediately after shoots emerge in spring you can begin to grow, make sure you gradually fill in the remainder of the trench with soil, make sure you don’t fully cover the growing tips.
  12. You can fertilize with fish emulsion or a soluble complete fertilizer at half strength.
  13. Make sure you add aged compost to planting beds in advance of planting.
  14. One thing about asparagus plant is that they prefer a soil pH of about 6.5 to 7.0.
  15. To get the best yield make sure you grow the asparagus in full sun.
  16. Make sure you plant the asparagus in a dedicated bed. The asparagus plant can live up to 15 years.
