Breeding rabbits at
home can be rewarding, but it requires some preparation and care. Here's a
simple guide to help you get started:
1. Choose the Right Rabbits
· Breed: Choose a breed
suited for your purpose (pets, meat, show, etc.).
· Age: Rabbits should be
at least 5-6 months old before breeding.
· Health: Ensure both buck
(male) and doe (female) are healthy and unrelated.
2. Prepare Housing
· Provide separate cages for the male and
female.
· A clean, well-ventilated, and safe area is essential.
· Have a nesting box ready for the doe
before she gives birth.
3. Breeding Process
· Always take the doe to the buck's cage (never
the opposite).
· Let them mate; it usually takes a few minutes.
· Successful mating often ends with the buck falling off the
doe.
· Repeat mating once or twice over a 24-hour period to
increase chances.
4. Gestation and Nesting
· Gestation lasts about 28-32 days.
· Around day 25, place a nesting box in the
doe’s cage with hay or straw.
· The doe will pull her fur and prepare the nest close to
birthing time.
5. After Birth
· The doe will usually give birth at night or early morning.
· Do not disturb immediately; check kits (babies) after a
few hours.
· Make sure they’re warm and alive, but don’t over-handle
them.
6. Care for Kits
· Kits nurse once or twice daily.
· They start eating solid food around 3 weeks old.
· Wean them at 6-8 weeks and separate by
gender shortly after.
