Turtles can make great pets, but they do need proper care
to stay healthy and happy. Here's a beginner-friendly guide to turtle care:
1.
Choose the Right Turtle
· Aquatic Turtles (e.g., red-eared
sliders): Need water to swim.
· Terrestrial Turtles (e.g., box
turtles): Live mostly on land.
· Research the specific species you want—they have different
needs.
2.
Habitat Setup
· Aquatic Turtles:
o Tank: 20–40 gallons minimum
for young turtles.
o Water Filter: Keeps water clean;
turtles are messy.
o Basking Area: Dry area with a heat
lamp.
o UVB Light: Essential for shell and
bone health.
· Terrestrial Turtles:
o Enclosure: Large enough to roam.
o Substrate: Soil or coconut fiber
(no sand or gravel).
o Humidity & Heat: Use a heat lamp and
monitor humidity.
3.
Diet
· Aquatic Turtles: Pellets, leafy greens,
insects, and occasional fruit.
· Terrestrial Turtles: Mostly veggies, some
fruit, occasional protein.
· Always provide fresh water.
4.
Health & Hygiene
· Keep the enclosure clean—dirty habitats cause illness.
· Watch for signs of illness: lethargy, shell rot, not eating.
· Handle with clean hands; wash after to avoid salmonella.
5.
General Tips
· Turtles can live 20+ years—be ready for a long commitment.
· Avoid overcrowding—turtles can be territorial.
· Don’t release pet turtles into the wild.

Aquatic turtles are some of the most interesting and fascinating reptiles in
the world and many make excellent pets. Many common species exhibit interesting
behaviors, and well-designed turtle habitats are often very beautiful to
behold. And while aquatic turtles aren’t suitable for all keepers, many species
adapt well to captivity when provided with suitable accommodations, proper
temperatures and clean water.
When caring for any pet, keepers must learn as much as possible about the
biology, behavior and ecology of their chosen turtle species, in order to
provide their new pet the highest quality of life possible. Begin that journey
inside, by learning about aquatic turtles, their place in the world and how to
provide them with an artificial habitat that meets their needs.
