This particular fruit can be grown in
any country as long as there is a plenty of space and a sunny spot. The name ‘kiwi’
is suggesting they came from New Zealand, but the fact is that they are
actually from southern China. A lot kiwifruit that is sold today comes from
Italy.
This particular fruit can be bought
as all-female, all-male or self-fertile varieties. Most female varieties of this
fruit tend to crop better as long as there is a male plant around them to
pollinate them. Under normal condition the ideal ratio is 1 male per 3 or 4
females.
How to grow Kiwifruit
1. This fruit requires plenty of space
and a well sheltered, sunny spot for it to thrive.
2. If you are actually planting both a
female and male, make sure you space them 3–4.5 m (10–15 feet) apart.
3. Make sure you plant into a slightly
acidic soil, well-drained and rich in organic matter, against a wall or fence
or over a pergola.
4. Also make sure you mulch around the
base of the plant, make sure you avoid direct contact with the stem to prevent
rotting, and also apply a general-purpose fertilizer as the new plant springs up.
5. Make sure you tie in the stems as
they grow.
6. Make sure you don’t allow the plant to
dry out, most especially in hot, dry weather.
7. The new plant will start to produce
fruits after 3 to 4 years.
8. You can plant the container-grown
kiwi vines at any time of the year.
9. You can harvest from the established
plants in the late summer from September to October, although it depends on the
variety.
How to harvest
kiwifruit
Make sure you pick the fruit before
the first frosts of the year. If you want to make it ripen, you can place them with
other fruit in your fruit bowl, like bananas.
