The best food for a tortoise depends on the species, but
here’s a general guide for most commonly kept land tortoises like sulcatas,
red-footed, Russian, and leopard tortoises:
Staple Diet (Mostly Plants)
· Leafy greens (daily):
o Dandelion greens
o Collard greens
o Mustard greens
o Turnip greens
o Kale (sparingly,
due to oxalates)
o Romaine lettuce
(not iceberg)
· Vegetables (2–3 times a week):
o Squash
o Carrots (grated)
o Bell peppers
o Zucchini
· Fruits (rare treat):
o Strawberries
o Apples (no seeds)
o Melon
o Papaya
o Mango
(Mostly for fruit-eating tortoises like red-footed or yellow-footed. Others
should get minimal fruit.)
· Other good additions:
o Hibiscus leaves and
flowers
o Grape leaves
o Mulberry leaves
o Cactus pads
(de-spined)
Supplements:
· Calcium powder (without D3 if kept outdoors;
with D3 if indoors)
· Cuttlebone for extra calcium and beak maintenance
Foods to Avoid:
· Iceberg lettuce
· Spinach (high in
oxalates)
· Rhubarb
· Dog/cat food
· Bread/grains

(for herbivorous tortoises)
