This particular plant is a speedy short-season cover crop. Buckwheat establishes, blooms and it also reaches maturity in just 70 to 90 days. This particular plant really suppresses weeds and it attracts beneficial insects and pollinators with its abundant blossoms.
Furthermore this plant really thrives in cool, moist conditions but it is not frost tolerant. This plant is not particularly drought tolerant, it can wilts under hot, dry conditions.
Buckwheat growing requirements
  1. The soil requirement: Buckwheat require a sunny site with good drainage.
  2. The site position: The postion should be full sun to partial afternoon shade.
  3. Tolerant of Frost: Buckwheat cannot actually tolerate cold temperatures.
  4. The Feeding of the plant: If you are using buckwheat to improve a very poor soil, make sure you mix a balanced organic fertilizer into the soil before planting, this will give a better results.
  5. The spacing of plant: The spacing is as follow; Single Plants: 3" (10cm) each way (minimum) Rows: 3" (10cm) with 3" (10cm) row gap (minimum)
  6. The Sowing and the Planting: Make sure the buckwheat is sow from late spring to late summer, although a bed will be unused for more than three weeks. Make sure you broadcast the seed into the cultivated soil, the seeds should be about 2 inches (5 cm) apart and one-half inch (1 cm) deep. Also thin to 4 inches (10 cm) apart in all directions.
  7. The Harvesting of Buckwheat: This particular plant can be pulled up and composted or turned under any time. Buckwheat will return the most organic matter when taken down five to six weeks after seeding.
